Turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so.

Denton Holme is known for it's colourful locals and "interesting" signage. One thing Denton Holme is not short of is charity shops. I felt like I'd have a gander in age concern on my way home today to see if I'd find any hidden gems in the shoes. Naturally...nothing struck me as exciting through the mass pairs of ganny shoes UNTIL I saw a flick of red in the very back of the shelf...

Not something I'd personally wear but they are different. After the 100 variations on a theme and the sheer amount of Japanese inspired fans I drew I really feel like I'm turning Japanese (I really think so). For £4 this was a bargain, thank you age concern Denton Holme!

Now for your listening pleasure...

Judith Wilde...

The bringer of pain to Graphic Design students the world over in more ways than one. I finally got my own shiny copy of the invaluable Visual Literacy graphic design book only to be injured in the process with a nasty paper cut, curses!

Amazing deal

Here is my generic pageholder at JenniferScott.co.uk (DNS is still resolving). Got a fantastic student deal until I graduate with 15% off from anvilhosting. Doubtful I'll really work much of this site until my 2nd year but for now it's a portal to UoC : GRILLUST and my R&R.

Today I've been drawing...

SHOES! This was my favorite one from the batch I drew and was the first drawing I did. It was actually the most intresting as I let go of my fear of drawing. As soon as I moved away from my charcoal media old habits resurfaced :(

Explaining to an alien...

Sadly I missed the mark on this project. My illustrator skills are fine but I didn't explain in detail the allure of lipstick WHY would we wear it? I also got a little bit of a bollocking for my development work and my lack of it (yes bad, I know).

Explaining to an alien...

How do you explain to an alien how to use lipstick without the use of language? Surprisingly it isn't quite as difficult as I first thought? I've tried to keep it as simple as I can so I can keep on point with exactly what I want to communicate.

Development work:

And a  panel from my final piece (working in progress)

It's not an easy project but it has been enjoyable getting to the final pieces. I feel most comfortable doing this kind of work.

GAH...

100 variations on a theme...THIS PROJECT IS TORTURE. It's no secret to myself, my friends and my tutors (probably) that I don't have a lot of confidence in my ideas and I feel out of depth trying to put them onto paper. How bad is that as a graphic designer? This project is WAAAAY out of my comfort zone and is frankly making me want to cry in frustration! After 1 page I started to run out of ideas not a good start thats for sure!

I love Airi , a friend of mine who is studying graphic design all the way in New York at the School of Visual Arts. She is without a doubt one of the hardest working students I've ever come across inspirational really. I bounce ideas back and forth with her a lot and she's great help with pre-critique. Funnily enough, one of her professors is Judith Wildes husband (I think) apparently so they work from the Visual Literacy book a lot. I think she may have a good idea for concepts. I really wanted to get this done on Friday though :( Oh well.

Books I've purchased as of recently:

Well worth the buy as Visual Literacy seems to go in and out of the Library like hot cakes. Mind I had the copy until my third warning from the library (don't do that guys!) cause I found it so useful and I didn't want to give it back.

Transatlantic Sketchbook Project 2012

So this post is a tiiiny bit personal but it's still related to design so thats okay right? Anyway this is The Sketchbook Project 2012. Pretty much the sketchbook project is participated by hundreds of artists and designers all over the world. All the books are sent by a given time to New York and are put on display in various art galaries throughout the US and Canda. It does actually come over to the UK but only to London (booooo!) I did email suggestions of The Baltic and Tullie House but I doubt that'll happen. I signed up to do this in the summer and chose "Transatlantic" as my subject. The sketchbook is of horrendous quality and I have rebound most of it myself. To be fair I haven't even started the project but I will when I have free time (lol, free time?). If you want your work on display over the world and would like a fun project to do then sign up!

Illustrator fun!

I'm not much of a illustrator by hand but I love getting on a computer and playing in Adobe Illustrator. Graphic work is so much stronger for me than freehand. I find Marcs sessions very informative and interesting.

Memories of China

So I'm finally back to the land of the living and seem to be (hopefully) out of the woods with this illness I've been having problems with! I've been given a new brief on composition to play with which I can easily say I'm enjoying quite a lot I feel very unrestricted to play with colour and imagery. The first concept I am looking at right now is "Memories of China". I feel quite in touch with Memories of China as my boyfriend is Chinese and I've spent quite a bit of time immeresed in various aspects of his culture. I have quite a thing for chinese paper lanterns that you can find hanging up in any chinese supermarket.

One artist I've been looking at is Jing Ling and his paintings on nature such as lotus flowers;

I was thinking of doing something similar to this for my literal representation, I'm thinking of abstracting using the idea of Chinese Lanterns in various compositions with pattern.

Finally here are some pictures I've played with using composition to create something intresting and different. I've also played with the focus to give a contrasting effect. To continue the theme of Memories of China I decided to use the Lucky Chinese Cat (which infact may be a Japanese version but they are very similar).
